Favorite Films: Smithereens

Greetings.
Today I’m going to review one of my favorite films.

This film is director Susan Seidelman’s (director of Sex and the City) first film. Smithereens is a film from the 1980’s that takes place in New York and chronicles a bit of the underground music scene that was occurring around that time. In the film, Richard Hell (from the band Richard Hell and the Voidoids) dresses like himself and plays the character Eric, and if you know about Richard Hell you’ll know that he’s credited for being one of the first people to contribute to the original punk look. The film follows the protagonist, Wren, who is a little lost. She goes around the city hoping to meet new people that can give her something she wants, whether that’s a place to stay for the night, or the chance to be in someone’s band in hopes of making it big. You could say she’s a little reckless; she steals things, gets herself thrown out of places, and doesn’t really take people’s emotions seriously.  Along the way, she meets some people including Richard Hell who she believes will offer her opportunities like getting to travel along with his band and she also meets a nice boy who genuinely wants her to travel with him instead. Ultimately, she does what she thinks would benefit her the most, and is left with unintended consequences and no one to turn to. This film has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard in a film, which is enough to make me like a film, but coupled with the great storyline it makes it one of my favorites. The characters in the film also have great style and its shot in the 80’s so it has that grainy film look to it.
